Considering our heads spend approximately eight hours a night on a pillow, selecting the proper one is just as important as selecting a mattress. Choosing the proper pillow can prevent neck pain, upper back pain and headaches. Pillows are designed differently for side, back or stomach sleepers. An ideal pillow for a side sleeper would be a firm pillow because it fills in the distance created between the surface of the bed and the sleepers shoulders. A back sleeper would do best with a medium-density pillow because it cradles the head and provides the right amount of neck support. Doctors recommend not sleeping on your stomach, but 11 percent of consumers do. Body size is also a factor in determining pillow type. Larger people do better with firmer pillows, while smaller people need softer pillows.
